– New Year.

Akira: Hah~~~~~ The new year has already started...
I haven't come up with a plan for "New Year Heroes"... I should really start making preparations.
It's kinda my fault for giving priority to the preparations for the Christmas League and LOM, though...
Aarghhh~~~~~~!! I gotta surpass Brad!!

Will: Akira, haven't you been thinking about it since Christmas League?

Akira: Brad's performance you showed me was certainly interesting. I could tell he had confidence in himself when he introduced his stuff.
When I think about it, none of my ideas match that...
Every year I spend New year randomly, so it doesn’t feel quite right.

Will: Looks like you're having quite a hard time, huh...
I know, why don't we go to Little Tokyo for a change of pace?

Akira: Little Tokyo?

Will: Yeah. Its style was also incorporated in Brad-san's Japanese New Year, so you should also try forgetting your New Year and look at it from a different angle.
If you learn about a foreign culture, you might get some hints.

Akira: ... You're right. I don't think I can come up with a good idea if I stay here, groaning, or if I work out blindly or run, so why not?

Akira: Ooh... That's a lotta people.

Will: Crowded as I expected.
Whoa, there are so many people wearing kimono! It sure feels festive. ♪

Akira: Hmm. So the Japanese New Year is really a bringer of good luck, huh.

Will: I'm pretty sure your family ate special dishes on New Year, too, Akira. If I'm not mistaken, they were called "osechi"...
The thing that looked like tamagoyaki, uhm... the datemaki. I've got some from Auntie, they were sweet and delicious. ♪
I was surprised to learn they're made from fish paste.

Akira: You remember quite a lot...

Will: Ah, hey. Since we're here, let's go pay a visit to the shrine, Akira.
I'm pretty sure most people here are visitors who came to do Hatsumode.

Akira: Hatsumode...?

Will: It's when you pray for the year to be a good one. You can get rid of bad luck or write your wishes on wooden tags and make offerings.
There are also many omamori; my family hung the ones for success of business.

Akira: Heh, you know a lot about this, Will.
Will: I come to Little Tokyo every year because I get orders for flowers from Little Tokyo shops to use as New Year's decorations.
I hear things from the people working for these shops and look up what catches my attention...
Look, there are shops with bamboo displayed at the entrance, right?

Akira: Yeah. I kinda thought it was odd to have bamboo rather than flowers.

Will: That's called "Kadomatsu", a decoration of the Japanese New Year. It's used as a point of reference for welcoming deities inside the house.

Akira: Heh! Then, what about that rope-looking thing?

Will: It's a "Shimekazari". It appears those are also for protection and for welcoming the gods.
It seems like you can also make them yourself, my family shop bought the material for me. I was also taught how to make them.

Akira: Hmm. I thought they were just decorations to give the business a boost, but turns out they mean something. Still, you know much more than I do, Will.

Will: Haha, I also learned from the books you had at home when we were kids.

Akira: ... I had such things at home?
But, I feel like I've heard about Hatsumode before...
Nghhhh... Now that I think about it, my old man did wear a kimono before...

Will: Yeah, I've also seen that. Pretty sure you and Ren also wore kimono for childern.

Akira: Hatsumode, New Year's decorations... kimono. Yup, yup, it's still vague, but I feel like I'm coming up with a flashy plan that's gonna outdo Brad's.
I wanna hear stuff on kimono and the Japanese New Year, so I'm going back to my parents' next time, I guess.
Thank you for inviting me, Will. Thanks to your explaination, I got to know a lot.

Will: Fufu, I'm glad it was useful to you in some way. Let's go to shrine, thenー

???: Huh? Akira and... Will?
